Is there a God?
- Science has found no evidence for God, so belief in God is unscientific (also in: Can science and faith coexist?)
- If everything needs a cause, who created God? (also in: The Kalam cosmological argument)
- Belief in God is just wishful thinking, a comforting crutch (also in: What is the meaning of life?)
- There are so many religions; they can't all be right, so why trust any of them?
Why does God allow suffering?
- If God were good and powerful, he would stop all suffering. (answered in full on the question page: The problem of evil)
- Natural disasters can't be blamed on free will, so why does God allow them?
- Philosophical explanations of suffering feel cold and useless when you're actually hurting
- Some suffering seems completely pointless, which suggests there is no good God
What is the meaning of life?
What is evil?
The problem of evil
- An all-powerful God could have created free beings who always choose good
- Even if some evil is justified, the sheer amount of evil in the world is far too much
- Animals suffered for millions of years before humans existed, so suffering can't be the result of human sin
- Saying "God has reasons we can't see" makes God unknowable and excuses anything
The Kalam cosmological argument
The moral argument for God
- You don't need to believe in God to be a good person
- The Euthyphro dilemma: is something good because God commands it, or does God command it because it's good?
- Evolution explains our moral sense, so we don't need God to explain morality (also in: What is evil?)
- Moral values could just exist as brute facts, with no need for God
Does life have a purpose?
Is Christianity true?
What happens after death?
Can science and faith coexist?
- Science has found no evidence for God, so belief in God is unscientific (also in: Is there a God?)
- Evolution explains the complexity of life, so God is no longer needed
- Faith means believing things without evidence, which is irrational
- The Church persecuted Galileo, which proves religion is hostile to science
