What happens after death?

Short answer

Every culture has asked what lies beyond death. Materialism says nothing: consciousness ends when the brain stops. But there are reasons to doubt that consciousness is purely physical. Subjective experience, rational thought and the unity of the self are hard to reduce to chemistry.

Christianity's answer is rooted in Jesus' resurrection, not in speculation. The New Testament teaches that at death believers go to be "with Christ," which is far better. That is not the final destination, though. The ultimate Christian hope is not floating in the clouds as disembodied souls. It is bodily resurrection into a renewed creation, "a new heaven and a new earth," where God lives with his people and death, mourning and pain are gone.

The Bible is also sober about judgment. Every life will be accounted for, and justice will finally be done. This is good news for victims of evil, and it raises the stakes for each of us. Christianity's central message is that we don't face that judgment on our own record. Through Christ, forgiveness and eternal life are offered as a gift, received by trust.
